Pirk and muppets
A heavy chrome pirk jigged over wrecks, with one or two muppet or hokai teasers above it.
- Targets
- Cod, pollack, coalfish, ling
- Where
- Deep wrecks and reefs from a drifting boat
What you need
- Mainline
- 30–50lb braid with a 60–80lb leader
- Body
- 60–80lb mono, ~60cm
- Droppers
- 1–2 dropper loops
- Teasers
- Muppets or hokai on 4/0 hooks
- Pirk
- 8–16oz, chrome or glow
- Hook
- Treble, or a single to reduce snags
Build it
- Tie a swivel to the top of the body.
- Tie one or two dropper loops 25cm apart.
- Loop on the teasers.
- Tie or split-ring the pirk to the bottom of the body.
On the beach
Drop to the bottom, wind up two or three turns, then lift and drop. On rusty wrecks, a single hook loses far fewer pirks than a treble.
Knots for this rig are in Knots. Line strengths, hook sizes and weights are starting points: scale them to your tackle, the ground and the tide. Diagrams are schematic and not to scale.
