What you need

Rig body
1.3m of 80lb mono
Bait clip
Wire bait clip or Breakaway clip, high on the body
Dropper
Size 4 swivel with beads and crimps, low on the body
Snood
30lb fluoro, cut to reach the clip
Hook
2/0–4/0, or a Pennell pair
Bottom
Lead link, 5–6oz grip lead

Build it

  1. Tie the top swivel to the rig body.
  2. Crimp a bait clip about 15cm below it, with the clip pointing up.
  3. Thread on the low dropper (crimp, bead, swivel, bead, crimp) and tie the lead link.
  4. Fix the dropper about 10cm above the lead link.
  5. Tie the snood to the dropper so the hook reaches the bait clip with the snood just taut.
  6. Bait up, then clip the hook bend into the bait clip.
On the beach

Bind crab baits tight with bait elastic. A loose bait catches the air and pulls off the clip mid-cast.

Knots for this rig are in Knots. Line strengths, hook sizes and weights are starting points: scale them to your tackle, the ground and the tide. Diagrams are schematic and not to scale.
