Tie-at-home extras · Winter rig
Three-hook clipped-down
Three baits for when fish are thick, but clipped in line so you keep most of the distance.
- Targets
- Whiting, dabs, codling, pouting
- Where
- Surf beaches in winter
What you need
- Rig body
- 1.5m of 60lb mono
- Droppers
- 3 × size 10 swivels with beads and crimps
- Clips
- 3 × impact shields with crimps
- Snoods
- 20–25lb
- Hooks
- Size 1–1/0 fine wire
- Bottom
- Lead link, 5–6oz grip lead
Build it
- Tie the top swivel to the body.
- Work down the body: dropper, shield, dropper, shield, dropper, shield. Leave all crimps loose.
- Tie on the lead link.
- Space the droppers about 45cm apart, each with its shield just below the next dropper down.
- Tie on snoods and hooks, trim each to reach its shield, then crimp everything.
On the beach
Bait all three smaller than you would on a two-hook rig. Three small worm baits often out-fish two big ones for whiting.
Knots for this rig are in Knots. Line strengths, hook sizes and weights are starting points: scale them to your tackle, the ground and the tide. Diagrams are schematic and not to scale.
